Registering Vehicles
Tag Transfers
| 1. |
License plates are property of the vehicle owner. |
| 2. |
If a seller has no intention of replacing a vehicle that was sold, the license plate should be turned in to the Tax Commissioners Office for registration cancellation purposes. A receipt will print that may be submitted to the insurance company so that insurance can be cancelled on the original vehicle. |
| 3. |
The first owner name on the new vehicle and first owner name on the old vehicle must match for tag to be transferable. There is a fee of $5.00 to transfer a tag from one vehicle to another. |
| 4. |
A license plate must be registered to the new vehicle before it can be displayed. |
Annual Tag Renewals
Renewals
Between 30-60 days prior to your birthday (expiration date), a tag renewal notice will be mailed to you showing the amount of tag fees and ad valorem taxes due on your vehicle. In order to receive your new tag or decal, you must fill out the appropriate information and sign the renewal notice.
Late Fees
Late penalties are 10% of the ad valorem tax or $5.00, whichever is greater, plus 25% of the tag fee. Late penalties begin the next business day after your birthday/expiration date. To avoid having the payment returned, please include your GA DL number and current telephone number with your renewal.
NOT RECEIVING A RENEWAL NOTICE DOES NOT RELIEVE THE TAXPAYER FROM THE OBLIGATION TO PAY TAXES BEFORE THE RENEWAL DEADLINE. VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT OF TAXES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TAXPAYER.
**** If an annual renewal notice is not received, please call 912-653-3880 or 912-756-2434 with your license plate number, VIN number, etc. and we can mail you a duplicate renewal notice.
Name Changes
If you wish to have your name changed on your registration due to marriage or divorce, you must first apply for a new title. A name change requires that you appear in person with your original certificate of title and supporting certified legal documents (i.e., certified copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc...). In the case of divorce, the divorce decree must give the year and make of the vehicle. If a vehicle is financed, only the security lien holder can change the name on the title.

Vehicle Registration
The vehicle owner/lessee's date of birth is required when registering a vehicle. Upon initial registration, the owner's birthday is recorded to establish the next registration renewal period and expiration date of the vehicle license plate. If two or more persons own a vehicle, the registration dates are dependent upon the primary registrant's birthday.
Expiration Dates
INDIVIDUAL OWNERSHIP You must register during the 30-day period ending on your birthday. Example: Your birthday is June 10-you may register anytime between May 10 and the close of the business day on June 10.
LEASED VEHICLES You must register during the 30-day period ending on the lessee's birthday no more than 30 days prior to the lessee's birthday and no later than the close of business on the lessee's birthday.
BUSINESS/ENTERPRISE Registrations in the name of a business, corporation, or organization are due at the end of the business owner's designated registration month. Business registrations are determined by month according to the first letter of the company name as shown on the registration application.
Insurance
Effective February 1, 2003, insurance cards are no longer considered valid proof of insurance coverage in the state of Georgia (House Bill 994). Exceptions to this are fleet and self-insured vehicles, which require a copy of the fleet card or insurance card each year.
Proof of insurance on a motor vehicle will be the electronic record on the Department of Revenue/Motor Vehicle Division database. Your insurance company is required to notify the DOR of any change in insurance status within 30 days of the date the change is made.
If you have recently changed insurance companies, you may submit a binder with an effective date less than 30 days old as valid proof of GA liability insurance. If you have a newly purchased vehicle, you may submit a declaration page with an effective date less than 30 days old as valid proof of GA liability insurance.
Effective February 1, 2003, if your insurance information is not in the DOR database, you will NOT be able to renew your tag. A new policy of purchase or changes to an existing policy are the only exceptions.
Penalties
Late penalties are 10% of the ad valorem tax or $5.00, whichever is greater, plus 25% of the tag fee. Late penalties begin the next business day after your birthday/expiration date. To avoid having your payment returned, please include your GA DL number and current telephone number with your renewal.
